Barcode Scanner Buyer's Guide :Choosing the right scanner for your application

Basics

There are two main types of scannable barcodes: one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D). One-dimensional barcodes, also known as linear barcodes, were the earliest form of barcodes used, and although they are limited in the amount of information they can store, they are still widely used today. In contrast, 2D barcodes are capable of storing more information and offer more functional options.

1D Scanners

One-dimensional (1D) or linear barcodes have been in widespread use since 1974. These barcodes can hold up to 25 characters, depending on the type of barcode. 1D laser scanners are designed to read the information returned by reflecting light off the barcode.

2D Scanners

2D barcodes have greater storage capacity of up to 2,000 characters because they can be read both horizontally and vertically. Two-dimensional (2D) bar code scanners, often referred to as area imagers, scan by photographing the bar code. The scanned image is optimized for contrast and decoded to extract information. It is important to note that 2D  scanners are capable of scanning both 2D and 1D barcodes.

1D Laser Scanners

A 1D laser barcode scanner captures data by shining light onto a barcode and reading the reflected information. These devices are relatively economical in price, but their scanning range is limited to 2 to 24 inches. In addition, they can be challenging to read damaged barcodes.

1D Linear Imagers

1D linear imagers utilize CCD technology, similar to a digital camera. An array of hundreds of light sensors captures images and converts them into readable data. The advantage of this technology is that it is able to read poor quality or damaged barcodes at distances of more than two feet.

2D Area Imagers

Full 2D Area Imagers capture more detailed, intelligent images for all types of bar codes, including 1D, stacked, 2D and QR codes. They can scan at any angle from a distance of up to three feet, reducing scanning effort. In addition, these devices have the ability to read barcodes on a monitor or cell phone screen. The overall improved performance of 2D area imagers makes them a smart choice for long-term scanning.

How to choose the right barcode scanner?

After determining the type of scanner, the next thing to consider is the form factor. Different types of scanners offer a variety of form factor options, including corded, wireless, battery-less, and rechargeable. The ideal form factor should be chosen based on factors such as your work environment, scanning distance, and how often you scan per day.

Questions to Ask

*What is your scanning environment like? Is it in a retail store, factory or warehouse?

*What type of barcodes do you need to scan?

*Do you prefer a wireless or wired scanner?

*How many times per day do you scan? This will affect your need for battery life.

*Does long distance scanning significantly improve productivity?

*Do you need more than one scanner with a charging dock?

*What are the advantages of a fast-charging, battery-free scanner?

*Can a ring scanner optimize your pick and pack process?

If you are still in doubt about which form factor is best for you, please feel free to call the Barcode Scanner Factory sales experts at +86 07523251993 and we will be happy to assist you.

Handheld Scanners - Wired and Wireless

Barcode scanners handheld  are the most common form of scanning device. To use one, simply point the scanner at a barcode and press a button to complete the scan, which is confirmed by an audio or video signal when successful.

Handheld products barcode scanner can be further categorized into wired and wireless types. Wired barcode scanners typically connect via USB, serial, Ethernet, or keyboard interfaces, while wireless models connect wirelessly using Bluetooth or radio frequency (RF) technology. When using a handheld scanner, special attention needs to be paid to battery charging and wireless infrastructure setup.

Finger Ring Scanners

2D ring barcode scanners play an important role in areas such as pick and pack operations, parts handling, and quality inspection, and are favored for their ergonomic design. Designed for fast, close-range scanning with minimal physical effort, these scanners are available in both wireless models and wired versions that connect to wrist-worn mobile computers. Most finger-ring scanners utilize imaging technology to efficiently scan 2D barcodes.
